Perl is a high-level, general-purpose, interpreted, dynamic programming language. It was developed by Larry Wall in 1987 as a Unix scripting language to make report processing easier12. The name “Perl” is often said to stand for “Practical Extraction and Report Language,” though this is a backronym and not an official acronym2.
